Easter at Lake Pepin

A golden eagle giving flying lessons.
Easter was a beautiful, sunny, warm day. No, really, it was.  And we had a delightful day at Lake Pepin,  which is actually a widened portion of a stretch of the Mississippi River on the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin and about 10 miles south of Red Wing, MN.  We hiked some miles horizontally, and then almost vertically down steep 400-foot-high limestone bluffs to the lake. We had the pleasure of watching golden eagles soaring close by. It happened to be the day when the eagle parents were teaching their young to fly. What a spectacle!

There were trails to follow, but I'm using the word "trail" very loosely. The ground was covered by a thick layer of leaves left over from fall. And there were whole trees obstructing the way.

When we came to a sign that said "picnic area" we felt obligated to eat a snack. We're expecting to be stiff tomorrow. We used muscles that haven't been put to use for a looooooong time.

Looks like a lovely time! How fun to get to watch the eagles like that. The picnic area looks a little sparse - no tables? :)

KELLY: Not a picnic table anywhere.
SHERRY: Me too. What a relief!
