Tomorrow night the temperature will fall to 28 degrees BELOW ZERO, with a wind chill of 60 degrees BELOW. With all the arctic temperatures we're having lately, we thought it would be smart to learn how to build an igloo. It might be a good idea for you to know how to do this too.
You will need: sugar cubes, powdered sugar, and water.
Directions: First, set a circle of sugar cubes on a base. Remove two to allow for a door. Make a loose frosting of powdered sugar and water. This is your cement. Cement the second row onto the first row. Continue the layers, tipping them inward as your walls rise. Leave an opening on one side of the igloo to attach a doorway. If you have it, sprinkle Swedish pearl sugar (snow) around the igloo.
Keep in mind this was our first attempt. Our cubes are not very straight, and there are plenty of gaps for cold air to enter. What you don't know is there is an apple in our igloo that holds up the roof. An orange would work too. Actually, a small inflated balloon would work best, because you could pop it after the cement dries. Jasper wanted to make an igloo with me, but he lost interest by the third layer of cubes. He loved being around all the sugar though.
If you are new to Minnesota, we are so very sorry that you have to experience this weather.
